Cassingham Cubs Family Newsletter -- September 20, 2026

Dear Families,

This week, students and staff across the district reviewed the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) using resources from the I Love U Guys Foundation. The focus was on reinforcing the five SRP actions—Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter—with particular attention to understanding the difference between Hold and Secure.
At the elementary level, teachers used age-appropriate materials to review the SRP and practiced Hold and Secure with students. At the middle and high school levels, students reviewed the SRP through the I Love U Guys training video and classroom discussion. The goal of the review was to ensure students and staff can recognize the announced action and know how to respond.

This work supports our ongoing commitment to consistent safety language, preparedness, and age-appropriate practice across all buildings.

Thank you for walking your bikes and scooters on school property. There has been a great improvement in the past few weeks, and we appreciate your continued support to keep our Cubs, Mallard, and Moose safe! We now ask for your help to keep pets off of school property. Pets may remain on public sidewalks. We are finding that students with allergies to pets, or who are simply not comfortable around some animals, are having a hard time walking through dismissal crowds and finding their parents without encountering animals. Details are included in school board policy. If you could please keep pets off of school property, we would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your partnership!

Shawn Komara, Maryland Elementary School Principal
David Schottner, Cassingham Elementary School Principal

📱 STATE LAW ON CELL PHONE AND SMART WATCHES

Since 2025, the state law in Ohio is that each public school district must have a policy regarding the use of cell phones and smart watches. Bexley City Schools does not allow students to have these devices during the school day. They must stay in the student’s backpack, locker, or on their teacher’s desk.

🧁 BIRTHDAY PARTIES AND SPECIAL OCCASIONS

We are mindful of the variety of food allergies that may impact each classroom. School birthdays are celebrated in class with song, recognition, and/or other ways determined by each child’s homeroom teacher. Parents/guardians should not send food, drinks, balloons, outside deliveries, and/or trinkets to school for celebrations of birthdays. Special occasions require pre-approval by the principal.

🐾 PETS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS

Please remember that some of our students are afraid of dogs and to keep everyone safe we ask that all pets stay on the sidewalks around our school grounds during arrival and dismissal. Details are included in school board policy.

🏫 CASSINGHAM

 Annual Cardboard Challenge

A round sticker on a cardboard box advertising the Cassingham Elementary Annual Cardboard Challenge. We are excited to host the Cardboard Challenge at Cassingham Elementary! This is a great opportunity for students at any age and their families to come out and be curious, creative, risk takers and feel like a kid. This event invites families to come and PLAY and create some amazing things with just cardboard. We will have all the cardboard, tape, scissors and cutting tools you would need (although we always encourage you to bring safe things from home) but you are challenged to come up with a creative idea of what you would like to create. In the past families have made: boats, houses, games, hats, wearable art and so much more. So, come out on Saturday, October 3rd from 8:30 - 11:30 AM at the Cassingham playground and celebrate creativity, play and curiosity! We can’t wait to create with you! If you have extra cardboard boxes, please break them down and bring them to the Cassingham Office any school day!
